What Is An Emergency Services District

An Emergency Services District (ESD) is a political subdivision of the State of Texas, similar to a school district, library district, or hospital district. More than 300 ESDs operate across over 90 counties in Texas. Hidalgo County Emergency Services District No. 6 provides fire suppression services to the community, working alongside Hidalgo County ESD 5, which delivers Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The District is governed by a five-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court, and the Board is required to meet at least once each month.

ESDs offer a reliable and consistent funding source for emergency services, reducing dependence on unpredictable revenue streams such as fundraisers or occasional donations. This stable funding enables departments to maintain modern equipment, highly trained fire personnel, and improved response capabilities—enhancing community safety when seconds matter.

For residents and businesses within the district, an ESD often leads to long-term cost savings and contributes to the overall economic strength of the local community.
